you through the entire process as is :
When the potatoes arrive at the plant, they are unloaded and thoroughly washed
to get rid of any soil or dirt on it.
After a wash, they get peeled through swift turbines that take the skin
and eyes off the potatoes.
As soon as the crisp chips leave the fryer, they are sorted through an Optical Scanner which tracks the chips with the help of a high speed camera to identify chips that aren’t the correct size, shape or colour. These rejects are shot straight into the bin with a blast of air to make way for the golden boys to continue on the conveyor belt to get seasoned.

The process of packaging for Kurkure & Lays is synonymous.
The Chips or Collates are rolled over to the packaging room to be weighed and then dropped into a bag to be seal and get ready to ship away.
Now before they are all shipped away, the team does ensure the packaging is checked at regular intervals by Quality Control to tap any irregularity in the process.
What about all the waste?
Potatoes, skins, eyes & rejected chips make compost / fertilizer, Starch is shipped away to help make products like glue or paper; Pepsi Co ensures they utilize every bit of material in their plant to the best of their ability.
This state of the art Snacks plant has reduced its dependence on non- renewable energy by 85% from a baseline of 2006. This reduction has been on two counts – improved operating efficiency, technology intervention of plants and migration to renewable sources of energy.
The three key pillars for renewable energy are:
• Rice husk boiler – acts as an alternative source of energy, ultimately generating steam for heating oil.
• Bio Methane plant – it generates a portion of the electricity required and reduces the energy withdrawal from the regular grid.
• Vapour Absorption Chilling unit – entraps the flash steam, otherwise going to the atmosphere, going through the plant cooling system, giving benefits like reducing CO2 emissions, water saving, fuel cost saving and power cost saving.
As an end to our fun and very educational visit, we were treated to a delicious Kolkata ka pyaar bhara meal and of course a bunch of goodies from Pepsi Co…
